Metro PCS Makes $5.5 Billion Dollar Offer to Purchase Cricket Wireless.

I hate to say, I told you so. I have been predicting this for a long time coming. That’s right Metro PCS has made an offer to buy Cricket Wireless to create the worlds 5th largest wireless provider, and the only one with broad unlimited service offerings.

If these companies stay separate the competition they face is simply too great. As Jim Collins would say, these companies are good but not great. Now, with the possibility of a merger your looking at a new super-power wireless provider that could potentially change the way we know wireless forever.

Imagine unlimited everything being pushed on the big providers. Believe me you this is a major threat to them and they are watching this potential merger very closely. Look out AT&T, Sprint and Verizon you could be dealing with something the likes of which you’ve never encountered.

BusinessWeek calls Cricket, MetroPCS the “Southwest Airline” of Mobile Calling!

In an excellent BusinessWeek article titlted, “The Southwest Airlines of Mobile Calling“, mobile providers Cricket Wireless and Metro PCS are getting some well deserved mainstream media attention. The article goes on to suggest the two companies should put their differences aside and consider a merger (which is what I’ve been saying all along). The likelyhood of this happening while the current senior management teams are in place is not good. My prediction is that in a few years when senior management changes a little bit and both companies grow we will see a merger. But, for now the two companies will remain different and continue offering similair services. Check the article out, it also suggests a possible merger with AllTel which could be interesting. Just happy to see the two companies in BusinessWeek!

Metro PCS IPO Soars!

As expected the initial public offering of Metro PCS on the New York stock exchange was a tremendous success. They raised over $1Billion dollars in funding and lists a current stock price $28.55/share , up from their initial offering of $23/share. Investors are excited of the potential of this stock when comparing with Cricket Wireless’s parent company Leap Wireless stock which has at least doubled in price every year for the past (3) years. Companies like Metro PCS and Cricket are the future of wireless. People will not be tied down with expensive overage charges, and paying for features that should be free. Cingular, Verizon, Sprint better take note because just as fast as they became popular they will go they way of the cell phone buffalo.

This is by far my favorite free service for your cell phone. This multi-featured and “AD-FREE” service is brought to you by Google. Simply text message 46645 (that’s “Google” without the E). In your text message simply type what your looking for, IE: “Pizza Hut 60121″ or “Pizza Hut Chicago IL.” Within seconds, you’ll recieve a number from Google with the name, address and phone number! Or, you could type things like “Weather Chicago” to get a 3-day mini forecast, stock quotes – just enter the symbol “LEAP” , a dictionary – “Define Irony” , driving directions “chicago IL to 60187″ , unit conversions “cups in 1 gallon”, currency conversion “50 usd in euros” and more. You can even text message “HELP” to see a full list of these features in case you forget! Or, you could familairize yourself with googles page on how to use this service! My favorite use of this service is Q&A text with things like “Abraham Lincolns Birthday”.

Saved the best for last! The most unknown secret of cell phones is knowing how to get free ringtones. Simply download TONETHIS (don’t worry it’s spyware/adware free) and you can EASILY make your own ringtones from your MP3 collections. The advantage to this is you can select what part of the song is best fitted to be the ringtone IE)Chorus. Additionally, you can convert pictures into wallpapers/screensavers and send them to your phone. This amazing free service works by uploading your stuff to it’s website and hosting it temporarily, then sends your cell phone a text message with information on where to download it. Then you simply goto the URL pointed to in the text message and download your goodies. Standard download rates apply but, you must admit its alot cheaper then ringtone services plus you know exactly what your getting.
